In the melting pot of 1960s America, the birth of the AACM – Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Music – was one of many significant steps towards the evolution of a new jazz energy. Unlike many of its contemporaries, though, the AACM has stayed the course, and retains a profoundly influential presence some fifty years on. The list of associated artists – from Anthony Braxton, Muhal Richard Abrams and Jack DeJohnette to the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Henry Threadgill – is extraordinary, and the AACM’s commitment to supporting new ways of creating and teaching music has had a worldwide impact.

Fast forward to today’s London scene, where successive generations of multi-talented artists have found their own pathway through the world of jazz and improvised music, and where the legacy of the AACM is an inspirational part of a much bigger picture. Instrumentalist/composer/teacher Orphy Robinson brings together a team of the city’s finest improvisors to forge a distinctly London rewsponse to the AACM vision.

Byron Wallen, Jason Yarde, Rowland Sutherland, Nubya Garcia, Jerome Harper, Andy Grappy, Phillip Achille, Corey Mwamba, Doug Boyle, Nikki Yeoh, John Edwards and the great South African drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo and spoken word/vocal artists HKB Finn, Cleveland Watkiss, Lisa Lore (NuBluz Aesthete) form the tHE SPonTANeoUS CoSMic RAwXtra to play specially commissioned arrangements from Orphy Robinson, with visuals by SDNA, that will breathe a distinctively London energy into the AACM legacy.
